To achieve the look of the clock:
step_one: alt+F2 and run gconf-editor
step_two: navigate to apps / panel / applets / clock_screen0 / prefs
step_three: edit format key from 12hour to custom
step_four: edit custom_format key by pasting in the code from here
adjust font name size and color to your liking.
